Tip Calculator
Calculate tip amount and split the bill among multiple people.
How to use the Tip Calculator
The Tip Calculator is free and runs entirely in your browser — no sign-up, and nothing you enter leaves your device. It opens pre-filled with a realistic example, so you can see how it works before replacing any figure with your own; the results update as you type. Press Calculate to refresh the result panel, or Reset to return to the example.
The inputs it asks for:
- Bill Amount — a dollar amount.
- Tip Percentage — a percentage (enter 6 for 6%).
- Split Between (people) — a number.
The formula
Straightforward arithmetic: apply the tip percentage to the bill, then split the total across the party:
Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)
Per person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ People
- Bill
- the amount before the tip
- Tip%
- the gratuity percentage
- People
- how many ways to split the total
US convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people tip on the full total for simplicity — on a normal bill the difference is small.
Worked example
Using the example values — Bill Amount $120.00, Tip Percentage 20%, Split Between (people) 4 — the Tip Calculator returns a Tip Amount of $24.00. It also reports Total Bill ($144.00), Per Person ($36.00), Tip Per Person ($6.00).

Frequently asked questions
What's a standard tip?
In US restaurants, 15–20% for sit-down service is typical, with 20%+ for excellent service. Norms vary widely by country — many include service in the price.
Do I tip on tax?
Customarily you tip on the pre-tax amount, but tipping on the total is common and only slightly more. Either is fine.
How do I split unevenly?
This tool splits evenly. For uneven shares, apply the tip percentage to each person's own portion of the bill instead.
